When you are shopping for preloved fashion, the condition grade tells you almost everything you need to know before you buy. A beautifully cut Pakistani lehenga or a barely-worn abaya can be a wonderful find, but only if you know exactly what state it is in. Learning to read these grades is the single most useful skill for buying and selling second-hand clothing with confidence.
This clothing condition guide walks through each grade we use at Preloved Bazaar, in plain English. For every one you will find what to expect as a buyer, and how to grade honestly as a seller. Accurate grading builds trust, earns better reviews and means far fewer disputes or returns.
Why condition matters
Preloved means pre-owned, and almost every item has a small story behind it. A grade is simply an honest summary of that story. Get it right and a buyer knows precisely what is arriving; get it wrong and you risk a return, a refund and a dent in your reputation as a seller.
Condition also shapes price. A pristine, unworn sari should sit at the top of the range, while a well-loved everyday kurta should be priced to reflect its wear. When you come to list an item and sell with us, you will choose one of the grades below from a simple drop-down, so it pays to know what each one really means.
New with tags
This is the very top of the scale. A “New with tags” item is brand new and unused, with the original tags still attached or in its original packaging. Think of a wedding outfit bought for an occasion that never happened, or a gift that was never worn.
- As a buyer: expect a flawless, shop-fresh garment, exactly as it left the retailer.
- As a seller: only use this grade if the tags are genuinely still on or the packaging is unopened. Photograph the tag clearly so there is no doubt.
New without tags
A “New without tags” item is also brand new and never worn, but the tags have come off or the original packaging is gone. The garment itself is in perfect, unworn condition; it has simply lost its labels along the way.
- As a buyer: expect an unworn item in pristine condition, just without the original tags or box.
- As a seller: reserve this for pieces that truly have never been worn. If it has been tried on more than once or worn out, it belongs in a lower grade.
Very good
If you have ever wondered what does very good condition mean, this is it. A “Very good” item has been lightly used and may have slight imperfections, but it still looks great. It is one of the most rewarding grades to shop, because you get something close to new at a gentler price.
- As a buyer: expect a lightly worn piece that looks excellent, perhaps with a tiny flaw that does not affect how it wears.
- As a seller: include photos and a description of any small flaws in your listing. Honesty here is what turns a good sale into a five-star review.
Good
A “Good” item is a used piece that may show some imperfections and signs of wear. It has clearly been enjoyed, but it has plenty of life left and is ideal for everyday wear. This is the heart of the preloved condition scale, and where many of the best-value finds live.
- As a buyer: expect honest, visible signs of use, with no nasty surprises if the seller has described it well.
- As a seller: be specific. Mention any marks, bobbling or fading, and show them in your photos.
Satisfactory
Our lowest grade, which you will see in the listing picker as “Satisfactory”, covers a heavily used item with visible flaws. These pieces are for buyers who want a bargain, a project, or a special fabric they can rework. The word “Fair” is often used elsewhere for this kind of well-worn item, so think of the two as much the same idea.
- As a buyer: expect clear, obvious wear or flaws, so read the description closely and study every photo before you commit.
- As a seller: spell out every flaw and price it generously. A buyer who knows exactly what is coming is a happy buyer.
How to describe and photograph condition
Whichever grade you pick, your words and photos bring it to life. A few simple habits make all the difference:
- Shoot in natural daylight, with no filters, so colours and fabric are true.
- Take close-ups of any flaw, then mention it in the description too.
- Note the small things buyers care about: pilling, loose threads, missing buttons, faded dye or altered hems.
- Describe the fit and feel honestly, especially for delicate or embellished desi and modest wear.
The golden rule is to describe what is real, not what you hope. Under-promising and over-delivering is the fastest route to repeat buyers.
